For the Playa

How giving works.

  1. Pick a project. Every project here passed the Open Gift Standard: open to anyone who walks up, findable, and verified each year with photos.
  2. Give. By card, bank transfer, or from a donor-advised fund or foundation. Every gift is a tax-deductible contribution to our 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor, and goes only to the project you chose.
  3. We pay the vendors. Camps and artists never receive cash. Payments go to the fabricator, the rental company, the trucking firm — against the project's approved budget, and every payment appears on the project's public ledger with a receipt on file.
  4. You watch it get built. Build updates as they go, photos from the playa, and the annual attestation that the gift was open to everyone.

Giving from a DAF or foundation

Recommend a grant to our fiscal sponsor for the “For the Playa” program, naming the project. Each project page shows the exact wording and the sponsor's legal name and EIN. Foundations may make a restricted grant to the sponsor for a specific project; contact us for the grant packet.

If a project can't proceed

The sponsor applies your gift to a similar project at its discretion and lets you know. We never hold balances for donors and we never ask you to pick again; that's what keeps this simple and keeps us from being a donor-advised fund.
