How DAF giving works

The Open Gift Standard

  • Open to anyone who walks up — Roll up with any bike, any time. No membership, no dues, no questions.
  • Findable: 7:30 & C, at the corner · Daily 9a–9p, emergency stand always out
  • Marked with the standard placard on the playa
  • Separate from camp-only space — The repair bar fronts the street; camp kitchen and sleeping area are behind a separate shade wall.
  • Verified annually with photo evidence

The story

Every afternoon the city produces a parade of flat tires, mangled derailleurs, and chains that gave up in the dust. The Fixit Bar is where they get fixed — no questions asked, no camp affiliation required. We run four work stands under shade with trained volunteer mechanics on rotating shifts, a parts bank of donated and purchased components, and a self-serve pump-and-lube station for the simple stuff. Last year we logged over nine hundred repairs. This year we want to stop rationing inner tubes by mid-week.

Dust, weather & logistics

Dust eats drivetrains and volunteer energy alike. We over-order consumables because supply runs to the nearest town are a full-day loss, and we schedule double coverage for the afternoon rush. If tube supplies run out, we fall back to patch-only service; the bar itself has run five years without missing a day.

The budget — every line public

1 · 1,400 inner tubes, patch kits & cables — $3,100

vendor: Valley Cycle Supply · public benefit 100%

2 · Four heavy-duty repair stands & tool sets — $1,800

vendor: Torque & Co. · public benefit 100%

3 · Shade structure & signage for the repair bar — $1,300

vendor: ShadeWorks Reno · public benefit 100%
